Grab yourself a drink
Brown Spirits
I’ve really been getting into my instrumental and psychedelic groove vibes lately, chilling out to some Yawning Man and Matt Berry goodness, and spinning hot on my record player right now is the new album from local Melbourne rock trio, Brown Spirits. Their latest offering, Cosmic Seeds is a groovy gift to the ears, setting the tone for an afternoon spent writing, drinking in the summer sun, and just enjoying the sensory scenery their music creates.
Let’s dive in, so who are Brown Spirits?
Hailing from Coburg, Victoria, Brown Spirits are a psyched-out Krautrock to free-jazz wig out to funk-flavoured downtempo jam style band who endeavour to smash out every show as if it was our last. We try to maintain a strict DIY recording ethic, and have a bunch of global album releases so far, with the 2 most recent being on the UK’s acclaimed Soul Jazz Records, making us the first ever act from downunder to sign with the label. So far we’ve had amazing support from national radio and shared the stage with some of our musical inspirations such as Kikagaku Moyo (Japan), Frankie and the Witchfingers (USA), Minami Deutsch (Japan) and Yawning Man (USA).
Following on from our 2023 album Solitary Transmissions, we’ve just released our latest album titled Cosmic Seeds, which is now available on Vinyl/ CD/ Digital courtesy of Soul Jazz Records in the UK.
How would you describe Brown Spirit’s sound and who would you say has influenced you and the band?
We’re heavily influenced by Krautrock, Free-Jazz and Deep Funk music from the 1970s, our influences extend from CAN to Funkadelic to Miles Davis to Ginger Baker’s Airforce to Pink Floyd to Amnesty to Italian library soundtracks and more.
You’ve just released a new album – how did you handle the recording process, and can you tell us a bit about how it all came together?
It was a gradual process of trading ideas between Tim (guitar/keys) and Ago (drums/percussion) remotely and eventually piecing together enough songs that felt like a story, rather than just a collection of songs. I think this album sees us continue our DIY tradition of 1960s-1970s inspired thunderous psychedelic jams and excursions into Krautrock, while venturing deeper into the funk and jazz flavoured territories with moog-driven melodies and beyond.
If you could tour anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
It would be great to do the UK and USA sooner or later. Most of the love generated from the Soul Jazz releases has come from those two places, so it feels like a great place to start.
What’s coming up next for you – tell us everything!
More gigs, music, film clips (we do our own filming and editing inhouse) and hopefully some touring!
