Feel The Beat
The Fadeaways
Japanese bands always put a smile on my face. Their awesome style of high-energy rock’n’roll just stands apart in a scene already filled with amazing bands! And Tokyo based band, The Fadeaways, are no exception. Last year they shook their way through Australia’s most excellent dive bars, bringing their 50s, 60s and 70s inspired garage rock to our stages. We caught up with them over the magic of the Internet to have a quick chat and find out what makes them click.
Please tell us a bit about yourselves and the band?
We formed in Tokyo in 2005. Toyozo (Vox, Bass), Assman (Guitar, Cho), Ozzy (Drums). Ozzy and I played previously in a band from 2004, and Assman then contacted us and joined in May 2005. Oh my god - it’s almost 20 years!!!
Who or what inspires you in music and in life?
Mostly from our friends. There was a kind of movement for simple Rock’n Roll music in the early 2000s here in Tokyo too. We’d tell each other about good bands at the time and it made a small garage scene in Tokyo.
What do you love about 50s and 60s rock’n’roll and why?
First we got into the Japanese Garage scene like Guitar Wolf, Gyogun Rend’s, King Brothers, 5.6.7.8’s, and more over the last 20-years. Then we found Teengenerate and Evil Hoodoo. It was really sensational for us because they played some cover songs of 50s, 60s, 70s songs that we never knew (almost nobody knows!). So, we dig more obscure 60s Garage, 70s Punk and 90s Garage. We are really inspired from their way of digging forgotten good music.
What is the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you? Please tell us about it?
A show in Spain 2018 was super crazy! It was festival called “Bule Bule Toga Fest”. There were some bands I really love like The Kids, Giuda, Les Lullies, Duncan Reid and more. I enjoyed it too much! Assman and I broke our guitar strings in beginning of our show, so we borrow Lullies guitars. Then I did backflip from Bass Drum and cut my head by cymbal. I found my pillows stained with blood next morning! Then we had all of our money stolen that I had put in my suitcase at the airport! Crazy!
What can we expect to see from you and the band in the future?
We hope to go and play in any countries we have never been to. We want to spread our music and let more people notice how Garage Punk music is exciting. Like my favourite overseas bands do!
